STRAND RELEASING

June 8, 2007 GAY PEOPLE'S CHRONICLE 9

Can I touch your disc?

Young monk Sakda (Sakda Kaewbuadee) explains his desire to be a DJ to his dentist, the amorous Dr. Ple (Arkanae Cherkam) in Apichatpong Weerasethakul's film Syndromes and a Century.

Weerasethakul, an openly gay director, came to prominence with his earlier films, Blissfully Yours and Tropical Malady.

This film, however, met with opposition from censors in his native Thailand, who wanted him to cut four seemingly innocuous scenes. He refused, and the commercial run in his homeland was canceled even as the film won plaudits at film festivals across the globe. Syndromes is broken into two parts, one following a female doctor in a country hospital, the other a male doctor in an urban hospital, both representing Weerasethakul's parents before they met each other.

"It is an experiment in recreation of my parents' lives before I was born, which also includes the lives of those who have touched me in the present day," Weerasethakul said. "It will be an interpretation of distant lives and of architectures that I remain fond of, along with contemporary ones that I have around me."

Weerasethakul asked the film commission for the film back, assuring the censorship board that he was not going to appeal its decision. They refused to return the print unless he allowed them to cut out the four scenes, one as innocent as showing a monk playing a guitar. The director has used the attempted censorship of his film as the impetus to start a petition drive, urging the Thai parliament to overhaul its censorship system.

Northeast Ohioans will have two chances to see Syndromes and a Century as it plays on Friday, June 8 at 7 pm and Sunday, June 10 at 8:40 pm at the Cleveland Institute of Arts Cinematheque, 1114 East Blvd. Tickets are $8, $5 for CIA students and staff and Cinematheque members.
